The Crib

The Crib

The Crib is Kahu Youth’s home and a base for young people in Wanaka.  Its first incarnation was opened in February 2009 and officially opened in May 2009. The all new bigger, brighter better long term venue opened to young people in December 2011, and officially opened in February 2012.

Many of the programs Kahu Youth run are held at the Crib. Half the Adventure Club sessions are based there, along with many other smaller events and activities. Older young people regularly drop in unannounced during the day, and we regularly receive visits from school students after school. The youth workers also use the Crib as their own base, with administration, many meetings and focus groups held there.

The feedback from a meeting with the Friends of Mount Aspiring College in 2009 lead to us to open for ‘Drop-in’ sessions on Friday and Saturday nights. Initially open until 9pm young people very slowly began drifting in. The earliest sessions were poorly attended however by August 2009 we had a core of around eight young people using the space on a regular basis. Attendance numbers rose steady through to the start of 2010. At the request of our regulars at the beginning of 2010 we decided to open until 10pm.

By 2011 it had become clear we had outgrown our temporary home beneath the cinema, and we began looking for new premises. It did not take long to find the empty building on Russell Street and after a lengthy process; we were granted resource consent and moved in almost immediately.

With our new bigger premises, we now operate a vibrant, busy, happy youth centre with a large and growing proportion of local young people using the space regularly. The Crib has a kitchen with food always available to those using the space. During all drop in sessions the youth workers and young people work together and cook a shared meal. We also have a pool table, table tennis, a basketball hoop and table football alongside board games and books plus a room full of computers with internet connections, a DVD player and games consoles.
